Lead Flagger

The Lead Traffic Control Flagger plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians at construction and work zones. This position involves leading a team of flaggers, setting up and maintaining traffic control systems, and coordinating with project managers and crew members to ensure smooth traffic flow and compliance with safety regulations. The Lead Traffic Control Flagger must demonstrate leadership, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and dismantle traffic control signs, cones, barriers, and other equipment according to project requirements.
  • Monitor and direct traffic flow around construction sites to ensure the safety of workers and the public.
  • Supervise and train flaggers to ensure they understand traffic control plans and safety protocols.
  • Assign tasks and provide guidance to flagging team members to optimize site operations.
  • Ensure that all traffic control activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct safety briefings and site inspections to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain effective communication with crew members, project managers, and the public to address concerns and updates.
  • Use hand signals, radios, or other devices to communicate traffic flow changes.
  • Maintain accurate records of traffic control activities, incidents, and safety observations.
  • Report any issues, accidents, or near-misses to supervisors promptly.

Qualifications

  • Valid traffic control/flagger certification (e.g., ATSSA, TCS).
  • CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
  • At least 2–3 years of experience as a traffic control flagger, with prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with traffic control plans and work zone safety practices.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with team members, the public, and project managers.
  • The ability to make quick decisions under pressure and adapt to changing traffic and worksite conditions.
  • Attention to detail to ensure compliance with safety standards and traffic control plans.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and perform physical tasks such as lifting and carrying equipment.
  • Good vision and hearing to monitor traffic flow and respond to hazards effectively.
  • Strong commitment to safety and proactive in identifying and mitigating risks.
  • Dependability and punctuality to ensure smooth site operations.
  • Positive attitude and ability to maintain professionalism in challenging situations.
