Pneumatic Missile Operator

The Pneumatic Missile Operator is responsible for operating pneumatic boring tools (missiles) to install
conduit and telecommunications cabling underground with minimal surface disruption. This role requires
strong technical expertise, field experience, and a commitment to safe and efficient job execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate pneumatic boring equipment (missile tools) to install underground conduit paths for
    fiber and other telecom lines
  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, to support excavation and utility installation work
  • Read and interpret utility maps, work orders, and field instructions
  • Assess soil conditions and choose appropriate bore angles and depths
  • Coordinate with team members, including ground crews and supervisors, to ensure accurate missile
    pathing
  • Identify and avoid underground utility lines using locates and hand-digging methods when necessary
  • Perform maintenance and basic troubleshooting of missile and support equipment
  • Complete daily job reports, safety documentation, and time tracking
  • Follow all company, client, and OSHA safety protocols
  • Maintain a clean and organized job site
  • Travel to various job sites throughout the assigned region

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of direct experience operating pneumatic missiles in a telecom or utility construction setting
  • Experience operating a backhoe in a utility or construction environment
  • Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods
  • Ability to read construction plans and utility locate markings
  • Familiarity with potholing and hand-dig techniques to verify utility locations
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain
  • Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required
  • Must pass background check and drug screening
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform physically demanding tasks

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with other trenchless technologies such as directional drilling
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification
  • First Aid/CPR certified
  • Experience leading or training other missile operators

Work Environment

  • This position involves working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme cold, rain,
    snow, heat, humidity, and high winds. Physical labor is a significant component of the role, requiring
    strength, endurance, and attention to safety.
